November 9, 2010 – Los Angeles, California – Andy McCumber, Managing Shareholder of McCumber Daniels, presented “DNR Policies: Honoring Resident’s Advance Directives” to the attendees of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging’s (AAHSA) 2010 Annual Meeting.
Mr. McCumber discussed challenges related to honoring resident’s advanced directives and provided suggestions for policies and procedures that equip long-term care staff to rapidly determine a resident’s DNR status. Recent technological advances in life-sustaining measures such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs) provide a greater opportunity to save lives but also require staff to make immediate determinations regarding the existence of valid advance directives in an emergency situation. Attendees’ received guidelines for developing an integrated strategy to honor residents’ advance directives, respect residents’ privacy, remaining in compliance with the state’s regulatory requirements and limit legal exposure.
Andrew R.
